The Refresh initiative gives your child access to fresh, chilled drinking water at any time during the day. Drinking water will help your child stay healthy, improve co-ordination and reduce tiredness.
Good oral health in childhood means healthy teeth and gums throughout life. Childsmile is working to ensure all children, regardless of income or background, have the best possible start.
Good oral health should be established in the child's earliest years, even before the first tooth appears. Childsmile is a Scotland-wide programme designed to improve the oral health of children in Scotland. There are a team of people ready to help you look after your children's teeth.
Every three and four-year-old attending nursery in Scotland (extended into some P1 and P2 classes in schools) is eligible to be offered:
• free daily supervised toothbrushing within their nursery or school
• free dental packs, which contain a toothbrush, 1000ppm fluoride toothpaste and oral health messages
• oral health education for your child.
Research evidence and dental experts agree that establishing a toothbrushing routine at an early age can prevent tooth decay in childhood and later life.
Fluoride varnish provides extra protection against tooth decay when used in addition to brushing. Scientific studies have shown that fluoride varnish gives added protection to teeth against decay when used in addition to brushing teeth regularly with fluoride toothpaste.
Childsmile will provide twice-yearly fluoride varnish applications from two years at the dental practice and from three years in priority nurseries and schools. Visit Child Smile for further information.
