Pupils across Glasgow celebrated International Day of the African Child on 16 June thanks to a special menu in Fuel Zones.
At lunchtime, primary school pupils were treated to lentil soup as a starter with a choice of curry with rice, spicy meatballs, pitta bread and salad or Jollof rice for a main course and banana bread for dessert. Secondary school canteens offered a meal deal to pupils.
For every meal sold in primary and secondary schools, Cordia made a donation to Glasgow City Council’s charity - Malawi Leaders of Learning (MLOL).
The International Day of the African Child is an annual event held across the world on June 16 to raise awareness of the continuing need to improve the education available to African children.
The date symbolises the day 39 years ago when thousands of black schoolchildren marched in a column more than half a mile long, protesting against the poor quality of education in the country and demanding the right to be taught in their own language.
Across Glasgow, school children are learning about African countries as part of the global citizenship education programme.
Julia McCreadie, Cordia’s head of Encore and facilities management, said: “We’re proud to be commemorating the Day of the African Child by serving an African inspired menu in schools throughout Glasgow.
“Cordia will be making a donation to Glasgow City Council’s charity - Malawi Leaders of Learning (MLOL) for every meal purchased on Tuesday, helping the organisation continue its great work.”
