On March 9 we celebrate International School Meals Day (ISMD), aimed at raising awareness of good nutrition for all children regardless of their circumstances.
All nations are invited to take part in ISMD and share their practices in promoting healthy eating within schools. This year has the theme of food, culture and heritage – food that reflects you.
On the day, pupils across Glasgow will be treated to a Scottish themed menu including Scotch broth, sausage stovies and shortbread.
Since its launch in 2013, ISMD has been connecting children around the world with the intention that healthy eating habits are developed.
An emphasis has been placed on the link between healthy eating and education leading to better learning.
Children and young people (with the support of their teachers or other adults) are encouraged to share ‘stories’ about their culture, heritage and associated food – things like family food traditions, favourite (or not) foods or festivals, ceremonies and celebrations that take place.
